For many years, the artist Thorsten Brinkmann has been combining the medium of photography with a wide range of objects and found pieces in a series of works. The artists book Assemblagen provides an overview of these works which disrupt the illusionistic visual space of photography in such a way as to create trompe-loeil effects. The works give rise to a material presence which photographs otherwise conceal, and they repeatedly glide into the realm of sculpture. This brings the photographs back into proximity with the objects which they in part depict. There accordingly arises a discourse between different media but independently thereof, the combination of items and objects which have no particular connection in everyday life engenders new meanings which proceed entirely in the sense of the () Songs of Maldoror by Lautréamont: they appear like the random encounter between a sewing machine and an umbrella upon a dissection table.
