In her study, Köntgen unfolds a vibrant picture of violence and abuse of power executed by a female squire in 18th century, in one case leaving a servant dead. By applying a microhistorian approach to a vast amount of sources, the study reveals a stunning variety of physical abuse and emotional humiliation in Prussian >Gutsherrschaft<. In baring an unknown range of social (dys-)functionalities at Prussian manors from a subaltern view, the study offers new readings of social and power dynamics.
