The almost three hundred letters from the young painter Maria Rohne (1881-1961) to Carl Hauptmann, who met in Worpswede in 1906, are testimony to a friendship and deep love that led to Carl Hauptmanns second marriage in 1908. Maria Hauptmann-Rohne accompanied the poet from 1908 until his death in 1921. In 1910 she became the mother of Carl Hauptmanns only child, his daughter Monona. Maria Rohnes letters document the first encounters between the young painter and the much older poet, the beginning of their love, their marriage, the experience of having a child together and the everyday affairs of a writers household. The letters are accurately transcribed and accompanied by an explanatory commentary.
