Assessment of Child Labour in Street Hawking in Makurdi Town of Benue

The study assessed child labour in street hawking in Makurdi Town of Benue State, Nigeria. A total 75 children were selected for the study using Systematic Random Sampling (SRS). Data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages, Chi-square (2) using SPSS version 20.0. The results showed that more female children are involved in hawking than male children between the ages of 16-17 years. The major reason for hawking as gathered by the study is to generate revenue for parents and guardians of the children involved. Most of the children hawk from morning to evening, which prevents them from going to school and they hate street hawking with varied reasons. The study revealed that children are exposed to risk of sexual harassment/inducement, bad gangs, accidents and physical assault. The major sickness that affect them are typhoid, gonorrhea, syphilis. The major types of goods hawked are those in the category of others which were not specifically mentioned, pop-corn and dry groundnuts. The major mode of hawking is any street across the town, the study also revealed that one of the major controls of child labour is legislation
