The oxford dictionary defines enlightenment as the education that results in understanding and the spread of knowledge; as it becomes the journey of self-recognition. Allen Ginsberg the American poet was one of the unique individuals who sought enlightenment till the day he died. Ginsberg not only kept searching for inner peace and enlightenment, but also fought for individualism. He called on Americans to open their eyes and see the truth about the American culture and political government that oppresses the individual. Ginsberg kept on fighting for their generation's freedom from the social and cultural norms. After World War II America started to change. The political government kept citizens under close obedience. Allen Ginsberg, Garry Snyder and Jack Kerouac started to fight back against the oppression that was muffling the individuality of their generation. The three friends, Ginsberg, Snyder and Kerouac, started a movement that represented the true voice of the young generation; they called themselves the Beat Generation. The Beats referred to the constant beating that Americans faced from their social, cultural and government.
